Sculpin with sauce

[The head as a culinary delight]

Sculpin is a first class white fish from the deep sea. Although it can often be purchased frozen, if you did not try a fresh one – you do not know what a real sculpin tastes like. The best part of the fish, and that only the experts know - is the head!

Sardines on a scewer

A popular speciality, sardines on a scewer are an authentic Lastovo dish, although some other islands have embraced it and even claim it to be theirs. But no matter, you certainly have to try this simple, cheap yet top quality dish.

  • 10-12 large sardines per person
  • salt
  • 50 cm long wooden skewer, the flatter the better, about 2 cm wide.

Poached fish

From the sea to the pot.  Poached fish - known locally as "riba na bijelo" or "na poparu" is a dish enjoyed in a few places. Why!? Simply because the fish has to be really fresh. Forget those from the freezer or frozen. Only use those very fresh, caught an hour before, and this is possible on Lastovo! Therefore, don't miss out - enjoy the dish rich in taste and flavour enhanced by the aromas of numerous herbs.

  • 1 kg of fish (dory, grouper, saddled seabream, seabream, mullet, bogue bream)
  • ½  kg of potatoes
  • ½ dl of olive oil
  • one onion
  • 5-6 cloves of garlic
  • a bunch of parsley, bay leaf, ground pepper, salt, lemon

Lobster Pasta

Premium culinary delight. Lobster Pasta is one of the most famous original dishes from Lastovo, prepared there for ages. Here is how to prepare it:

  • ½ kg of prawns
  • ½ kg of pasta (tagliatelle)
  • one larger onion
  • ½ dl of olive oil
  • tomato puree or canned peeled tomatoes or ½ kg of fresh tomatoes
  • 2 dl of dry white wine
  • a tablespoon of bread crumbs, salt, pepper, fresh basil
Cook the lobster for 3-4 minutes in boiling water. It is best to carefully and quickly plunge a live lobster into boiling water and cover the pot. As soon as it's cooked, take it out of the pot and cut into large chunks.

Culinary delights

Food from Lastovo. The archipelago of Lastovo is rich in first class fish, so the taverns and restaurants along the sea coast are great to eat in. The best fish restaurants are in Skrivena Luka, Zaklopatica or in Pasadur, and for meat dishes roasted under the bell with home made bread and a glass of top quality maraština wine best go to the farm at Podanje in the centre of the island.
